The Lutheran Youth Centre, situated in Athlone, Cape Town has been in existence since May 1980 and owes its establishment largely to the financial support provided by the Church of Sweden at that time. The institution has mainly been established as a youth centre, serving the interests of young people attached to the Evangelical Lutheran Church as well as young people from all other denominations and, of course, the wider community. Over the years the Centre has grown with additional space and smaller dormitories added to the existing building.
Being established at the time of tremendous political activity in South Africa, it became the second home of many political activists, many of whom came to occupy high office in the government of democratic South Africa. The Centre also provided a home away from home for many students who came from various rural towns to study at tertiary institutions like Hewat College of Education, Universities of Cape Town and the Western Cape and the then Peninsula Technikon.
With the growth of this institution over the years, we have also become more business orientated in order to provide for the needs of a much wider community.
